Philosophy

The Scheme was initiated to provide respite and support to people with a disability and their families on the Sunshine Coast and has a commitment to certain key principles, including:

Human Rights

People, no matter what their ability, have the same fundamental rights. People should have the same opportunities as others regardless of their ability or appearance. They should have the right to participate in decisions which affect their lives. The Scheme also believes we have a duty to promote a positive image of people with a disability.

Quality Support

Attempting to help as many families as possible has, in the past, proven not to be the most effective use of our resources. It is likely to result in a service that provides a bandaid to many but cannot offer real and lasting improvements for any families. It is better to limit the number of families we assist to ensure that we can support them with highly skilled Support Workers and quality support from our Coordinators.

Truthfulness

We believe that those who represent the Scheme should always try to speak and act truthfully about their own actions and to avoid language that only provides part of the truth or that misleads. We believe that it is better to avoid telling even a white lie. We believe that an organisation that is always working toward being more truthful will be positively regarded in the community.

Quality Relationships

We believe that a quality service can only be provided by staff who are able to develop positive and supportive relationships with families. Therefore, the best service will offer support to families by caring Workers who are supported by skilled Coordinators who, in turn, are supported by the Manager and the Management Committee.

Quality Assurance

We believe that administrative requirements are an important part of a Quality Service. They are a valuable tool that helps focus on providing quality support. One of the aims of Quality Assurance is to provide safeguards for both the service and those we support. Such protective devices enhance our ability to focus on the quality of the support we offer directly to the person and their family. The Scheme is proud to endorse and incorporate the Quality Assurance Standards that Disability Services Queensland has established.

Focused Training

We believe that a quality service cannot be offered without well targeted training. In particular, our Support Workers need every opportunity to ensure they have all the skills they need for their role. To this end, we will always aim to keep staff up to date with the knowledge and skills required to provide the best support possible.
